Author & Seminary Professor Howard Hendricks Dies

Howard Hendricks, who taught at Dallas Theological Seminary (@DallasSeminary) for more than 60 years, died today at age 88, leaving behind a legacy of Bible lessons and Christian leaders across generations.

Hendricks authored 18 books and preached around the world in more than 80 countries. Through his teaching he influenced many Christian leaders; several count him as their mentor, including Chuck Swindoll, Tony Evans, Joseph Stowell and David Jeremiah.

Zig Ziglar Dies at 86; Motivational Speaker Inspired Millions

Zig Ziglar (website) (@TomZiglar), known worldwide for his folksy and often anecdotal motivational talks on success through serving others, died today at a Plano, Texas, hospital of complications from pneumonia. He was 86. Baptist Press (@baptistpress) reports:

Ziglar's deep, soothing Mississippi drawl, and speeches and books often sprinkled with mentions of his Christian faith, endeared him to millions. Ziglar was arguably the best-known motivational speaker of his day, having conducted hundreds of corporate seminars and given motivational speeches to hundreds of thousands of people over a 42-year speaking career.

Ziglar was the author of more than 30 books, including best-sellers See You at The Top! and Confessions of a Happy Christian. Another book, Confessions of a Grieving Christian, followed the death in 1995 of daughter Suzan Ziglar Witmeyer from pulmonary fibrosis.

Calvin Miller, Author, Pastor, Prof, Dies at 75

Seminary professor, theologian and bestselling Christian author Calvin A. Miller died Aug. 19 of complications following open heart surgery. He was 75.

A former Southern Baptist pastor and professor at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, Miller had served from 1999-2007 at Samford University's Beeson Divinity School, most recently as professor of preaching and pastoral ministry. He was the founding pastor (1966) of Westside Church (@WestsideOmaha), Omaha, NE.

The author of more than 40 books, including fiction, non-fiction, and poetry, he was described as a writer of love letters to the Lord. Among his work is The Singer Trilogy, published by InterVarsity Press (@ivpress), and his latest book, Letters to Heaven, published by Worthy Publishing (@WorthyPub).

Moody Radio Pastor C. Donald Cole Dies

Moody Publishers (@MoodyBooks) author and long-time Moody Radio (@MoodyRadio) pastor C. Donald Cole (retired) met listeners on the air a couple times each week to answer their questions about the Bible and the Christian life. He died at the age of 89 Aug. 4 from complications due to Parkinson’s disease.

A public visitation will be held at Wheaton Bible Church (@wheatonbible) Friday, Aug. 31. Visitation will be from 11:30 am–1:30 pm and a public memorial service will be held from 2–3:30 pm. The burial will be private.

Church Statesman & Author John Stott, 90, Dies

Christianity Today (@CTmagazine) reports: John R. W. Stott died today at 3:15 London time (10:15 am EDT), according to John Stott Ministries (@jsmtweets) President Benjamin Homan. Homan said that Stott’s death came after complications related to old age and that he has been in discomfort for the last several weeks. Family and close friends gathered with Stott today as they listened to Handel's Messiah. Homan said John Stott Ministries has been preparing for his death for the past 15 years. “He set an impeccable example for leaders of ministries of handing things over to other leaders,” Homan said. “He imparted to many a love for the global church and imparted a passion for biblical fidelity and a love for the Savior.”
